Linxdatacenter in Saint Petersburg reported ten years of uptime in September 2021. The key task of any data center is to minimize the number and length of downtime periods.
Uptime Institute, the global DC expert community, notes positive dynamics in this field: the share of data centers worldwide reporting serious interruptions dropped from 11% in 2020 to 6% in 2021.
At the same time, there are new risks that require attention. For example, the number of software failures responsible for the coordination of data center subsystems or for their monitoring has increased.
According to Gartner, the average cost of IT downtime for businesses in 2021 is $5,600 per minute. Because there are many differences in the specifics and scale of businesses, data center downtime losses for them could range from $140,000 to $540,000 per hour.
The optimal approach to effective data center management, according to industry experts, is a balance between automation and optimization of operational management, taking into account the structure and qualifications of the staff.
Оптимальный подход к эффективному управлению работой дата-центра, по мнению отраслевых экспертов, заключается в балансе между автоматизацией и оптимизацией операционного управления с учетом структуры и квалификации штата.
"Today, data centers compete by providing customers with up-to-date IT services and maintaining the uptime indicator at the highest possible level to guarantee constant access to them. The complexity of the task is constantly increasing as the number of IT systems increases, the operation of which excludes even minimal failures and short downtime periods," says Linxdatacenter General Director Olga Sokolova.
Linxdatacenter steadily increases its competences in operational management of the Saint Petersburg site. Today the list of acknowledged industry standards of Linxdatacenter St. Petersburg includes ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and PCI DSS, as well as ISO 22301 - Business Continuity, the certification of organization security against business interruption. Special mention should be made of the Uptime Institute Management & Operations Stamp of Approval certification - this year, the data center received it for the third time.
"Constant work on improvement of engineering systems management processes, analysis of our own mistakes during operation, as well as study of international practices together allowed us to spend 10 years in a completely trouble-free mode. Further goals in this direction include both deepening the competencies that ensured this result and scaling the experience to future sites under Linxdatacenter brand", - says Taras Chirkov, Head of Linxdatacenter St. Petersburg Data Center.

The customer faced a technical issue with a persistent BGP session flag with Linxdatacenter hardware. We examined the problem and found out that one of customer’s hosts was under a DDoS attack.
Because of the distributed nature of the attack, traffic couldn’t be filtered effectively, and disconnecting the host from the external network wasn’t an option. The attack stopped after changes in the server configuration, but resumed the day after. A 5.5 Gbps attack overloaded the junctions with internet providers, affecting other Linx Cloud users. To mitigate the effects of the attack, we employed a dedicated DDoS protection service.
To ensure the continuous availability of resources hosted in Linx Cloud, we rerouted all the customer’s traffic through StormWall Anti-DDoS system. The attack was stopped within half an hour. To prevent future cyberattacks, we organized all connections to the customer’s resources through the StormWall network.
