In the light of recent geopolitical events, DDoS attacks on information systems hosted in Russia have multiplied. The increased number of attacks was reported by reliable media citing trusted sources in the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia.

There are two main models for implementing such a solution.

Another approach is product-based, which means the using a ready-made IT product for solving business problems needs. The product is ready to run in different IT infrastructures, which means a business can immediately benefit from it and bypass the shortcomings of custom-built solutions.

Those options work for their respective customer audiences. So far, the project-based approach to full-fledged backup and disaster recovery prevails on the Russian IT market.

Both options solve the tasks for different groups of customers. However, the product-based approach to Backup&DR is the future — and here’s why:

A new market emerges  

Even though the Russian market of cloud products and services lags behind in terms of standards, it’s showing notable growth. An ecosystem of services for business and government is being actively formed.

The market is still on the way to maturity, and the client demand for cloud products isn’t always met by the existing range of IT services. A project-based approach, which implies the creation of custom solutions from the components available on the market, doesn’t fit the fast-growing demand for Backup&DR.

The market needs ready-made solutions which can be deployed quickly and ensure the uninterrupted operations of IT systems. Since 2017, the market for DR solutions in Russia has grown 6 times, and the core advantage of the product-based approach is the ability to maintain such a pace.

Safe for data and applications

The architecture of reliability 

The functioning of Linx Safe is organized as follows: The connection to the AWS platform is established through direct channels to traffic hubs in Frankfurt and Stockholm.
Linxdatacenter engineers set up a secure connection to AWS for data replication.

A sequence of actions is developed and followed to establish the necessary IT infrastructure in a global cloud.

This digital twin will be immediately enabled in case of an incident and can be used for testing purposes. Linx Safe is a full-fledged backup and recovery product that includes training for the client’s IT specialists and 24x7x365 technical support and consulting in Russian and English.

Target audience 

Linx Safe meets the needs of various groups of clients. It’s most relevant for customers with a critical need for replication of data and infrastructure, such as game developers (Game Dev).
It also meets the typical requirements of the EdTech segment, which needs continuous availability of resources and services.

business challenge

The customer faced a technical issue with a persistent BGP session flag with Linxdatacenter hardware. We examined the problem and found out that one of customer’s hosts was under a DDoS attack.

Because of the distributed nature of the attack, traffic couldn’t be filtered effectively, and disconnecting the host from the external network wasn’t an option. The attack stopped after changes in the server configuration, but resumed the day after. A 5.5 Gbps attack overloaded the junctions with internet providers, affecting other Linx Cloud users. To mitigate the effects of the attack, we employed a dedicated DDoS protection service.

Solution

To ensure the continuous availability of resources hosted in Linx Cloud, we rerouted all the customer’s traffic through StormWall Anti-DDoS system. The attack was stopped within half an hour. To prevent future cyberattacks, we organized all connections to the customer’s resources through the StormWall network.
