Forecast: deficit of IT infrastructure components will increase the cloud demand

Global shortage of two key IT infrastructure components – microchips and data storage drives – can lead to an increase in the cloud demand in Russia in the beginning of 2022. According to Linxdatacenter’s estimate, the demand will grow by 15-20%

TrendForce’s analysts estimate the worldwide demand for certain types of microchips at 10-30% above the available volume. Waiting period for big manufacturers can reach four months and is even longer for smaller companies: up to a year. This leads to a price growth both for microchips and final products created with them.

Aside from the microchips situation, the data storage market is affected by the new cryptocurrency Chia which is mined on the NVMe drives. The data space requirement is what differs Chia from classic cryptocurrencies using video cards’ resources.

TrendForce also notes that supply of hard drives is dropping because of a shortage of the NAND flash memory controllers.

Vendors of controllers already reported about this deficit in the end of 2020. Large manufacturers, including TSMC and Samsung, could not handle the demand growth because of the pandemics which created various problems, such as temporary production shutdown.

The current deficit of microchips and SSD already impacted the industries of household utilities and vehicle manufacturing. Sooner or later, it can be expected to affect the corporate IT infrastructure market too.

“We estimate that these trends will reach Russia by the beginning of 2022. Our country is included in the global supply chain, and it means that local companies will be fully affected by the worldwide interruptions in the supply of IT infrastructure components.

“We estimate that these trends will reach Russia by the beginning of 2022. Our country is included in the global supply chain, and it means that local companies will be fully affected by the worldwide interruptions in the supply of IT infrastructure components. Roman Shulimov, Sales Director Linxdatacenter..

According to him, companies that have successfully completed their hardware upgrade, will have an advantage. These include data centers, cloud providers, large enterprises and state organizations with large-scale IT infrastructure.

“Others, should they fail to ensure an infrastructure safety margin, will face the consequences of the upcoming deficit. IT resources of an outside provider will become their single solution,” notes Roman Shulimov.

Linxdatacenter forecasts a jump in the demand for cloud resources. The company estimates the cloud demand increase in Russia at 15-20% in the first quarter of 2022, due to a discrepancy between the business’ digitalization needs and IT infrastructure availability.

“Today everybody works with data, its volume constantly increases, requirements for its quality are growing, its structure becomes more complex: the shortage of data storage systems and chips for data processing may become an unsolvable issue for many companies. Cloud operators have the necessary competencies and platforms for providing needed resources,” adds Roman Shulimov.

business challenge

The customer faced a technical issue with a persistent BGP session flag with Linxdatacenter hardware. We examined the problem and found out that one of customer’s hosts was under a DDoS attack.

Because of the distributed nature of the attack, traffic couldn’t be filtered effectively, and disconnecting the host from the external network wasn’t an option. The attack stopped after changes in the server configuration, but resumed the day after. A 5.5 Gbps attack overloaded the junctions with internet providers, affecting other Linx Cloud users. To mitigate the effects of the attack, we employed a dedicated DDoS protection service.

Solution

To ensure the continuous availability of resources hosted in Linx Cloud, we rerouted all the customer’s traffic through StormWall Anti-DDoS system. The attack was stopped within half an hour. To prevent future cyberattacks, we organized all connections to the customer’s resources through the StormWall network.
